About us

Department of Regional Economic Studies is a research unit under the Presidium of the Buryat Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Department was founded in 2007 with the mission to strengthen the role of research in addressing fundamental and applied economic problems of the Republic of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal region and to determine research specialization in the study of the economies of trans-border territories of Russia, Mongolia, and China.

The founder and first director of the Department was Professor Nikolai I. Atanov. Today the Department is led by Professor Zorikto Dondokov.

Main research areas include:

  • Economic cooperation of trans-border territories of East Asia
  • Input-output interactions in regional economy
  • Development of the forecasting and monitoring system for the economy of the Republic of Buryatia
  • Human capital and problems of migration

The Department also focuses on a comprehensive analysis of the ways to improve the region’s competitiveness in the Russian economy.

The Department’s staff includes 18 researchers and administrative personnel, of whom 2 are Doctors of Sciences in Economics, 5 Candidates of Sciences in Economics, 1 Candidate of Sciences in Sociology, 1 Candidate of Sciences in Engineering, and 1 Candidate of Sciences in History.
